Tiki Triangle

Gilligan’s Island

Gilligan’s Island

A 3-hour cruise turned out to be 3 short seasons of this Mid 1960s American television broadcast a sitcom. Of course there was Gilligan, the Skipper, the millionaire and his wife, a movie star, the professors and Mary Ann.

This had tiki appeal because it was situated on a tropical island and you can often see the castaways drinking from coconuts. Its fun, its campy, not terribly deep or complex and it is easy to see why it died out after 3 seasons. The plot became redundant.

Theme Song Lyrics:
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip,
That started from this tropic port,
Aboard this tiny ship.
The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day,
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.
The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.
The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle,
With Gilligan,
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star,
Professor and Mary Ann
Here on Gilligan’s Isle.
So this is the tale of our castaways,
They’re here for a long, long time.
They’ll have to make the best of things,
It’s an uphill climb.
There were just under 100 episodes made in the 3 seasons.  It started off in black and white and ended in color much like I Dream Of Jeanie and Bewitched in the same time period.  It ranked as high as #18 but when it dropped to #49 CBS cancelled the series though today its a classic.
While Ginger the movie star often used her sex appeal, many agree Mary Ann with the short shorts and midriff showing was far sexier.  This was still the transitional period of American history which did not allow women to show their navel or belly button, but in all press material both Mary Ann and Ginger had their bare stomachs showing.
