1872  The ship Mary Celeste sailed for Genoa from New York with a cargo of 1700 barrels of alcoholic spirits, later found abandoned near the Azores.

1950  Hawaii officially becomes the 50th state of the United States.

1996  The Distilled Spirits Council of the US votes to remove hard liquor ads on television and radio.
