Episode #2447 – Leap Year Cocktail
February 29 is the inspiration for the Leap Year cocktail. This does not mean you cannot enjoy it more than once every 4 years! While it is not my favorite, it might be worth trying. It was created by Harry Craddock at the Savoy Hotel Bar which was across from the production of Pirates of Penzance. In the plot, the young pirate, who has aged 21 years cannot break free from his contract because it specifically states he must wait until his 21st birthday, and that would not happen until he is 64 years of age because he was born on Leap Day. Another interesting note is that a woman’s society broke social norms and declared that it was perfectly fine for the woman to propose to a man on this day. Nearly 100 years later it never caught on.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 ounces gin
- 1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
- 1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
- 1/8 ounce fresh lemon juice
